Join us on a tour inside the Cathedral and the Royal Chapel. Here you will discover why this location was chosen to erect both of these holy buildings, as well as the political and ideological reasons behind their symbology and the change of mindset that began to shape a city which had remained entirely Muslim until that point. We will also highlight the clearly identifiable architectural differences between the two monuments – Gothic versus renaissance – and their political and artistic creators. We will be tracing their iconographic story and their most significant artistic elements.

Royal Chapel

It is here that the Catholic Monarchs Isabella and Ferdinand were buried as instructed by the royal couple, who ordered that the largest funeral chapel in Spain be erected to house their remains. Inside, the chapel features their magnificent Carrara marble tombs, together with one of the most outstanding pieces of forgery in the country and the fabulous collection of flamenco paintings owned by Queen Isabella.

Cathedral

Spain's first Renaissance cathedral and the second largest in the country. Standing proudly in the heart of Granada, it was built to express the importance of the city and the significance of the times it was living through. Granada's Cathedral, with its imposing dimensions, houses a fascinating High Altar that is entirely round in shape, an unprecedented architectural feat, as well as a wonderful collection of work by the great Andalusian artist Alonso Cano, who was from Granada.

After exploring both churches on the inside, a short guided walk will be made around the Cathedral's precinct.

The tour is made almost entirely on foot. It lasts approximately 2 hours. The level of difficulty of the walk is low and the route can be adapted to suit all ages. Tickets to enter the Cathedral and Royal Chapel are included.
